Long-term care issues are not only being discussed on the national level; many states are becoming more pro-active in terms of encouraging citizens to recognize the need for planning. Iowa state officials have just started to make their citizens aware of the “Own Your Future” Long-Term Care Awareness Campaign, a joint federal-state initiative to increase awareness among the American public about the importance of planning for future long-term care needs. Just over 20 states and the District of Columbia are now part of the initiative, which was first launched in 2005. You don’t have to wait for your state to adopt the program. You can start by going to the website of the National Clearinghouse for Long Term-Care Information and downloading your own long-term planning kit at http://www.longtermcare.gov/LTC/Main_Site/Planning_LTC/Campaign/Kit/index.aspxThere is also information on the costs of various long-term care services as well as what Medicare does and doesn’t cover.
