A recent study published in the Journal of Ophthalmology found that 44 percent of glaucoma patients fail to use their eye drop medication properly, some as infrequently as only 25 percent of the time. Dr. David S. Friedman of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and colleagues found that people over 80, those who don’t understand the eye disease and African-Americans in particular were among those least compliant. Glaucoma, actually a group of eye disorders, causes increased pressure within the eyeball and progressive damage to the optic nerve. If untreated, it will lead to vision loss and, in turn, loss of quality of life.
