Walkers are the most stable walking aids. They have a large base of support, which makes them appropriate for people too weak to use crutches or walking canes safely. Walkers also help people whose disabilities may include neurological, not only physical difficulties. For instance, medical walkers support Parkinson’s disease patients while also providing a barrier that slows down their tendency to lunge forward as the walk. For people with respiratory conditions, medical walkers can be fitted with a basket to hold an oxygen tank. Medical walkers for Alzheimer’s disease patients provide a convenient frame of reference to keep their attention focused on the immediate surroundings. Reciprocal medical walkers, for persons with very weak arms, allow one side to move forward ahead of the other. Walkers are traditionally made of metal tubes fashioned into a waist-high, four-legged frame with handgrips, providing support to the user on three sides. Walkers generally have rubber tips on all four legs. One difficulty is that walkers do not allow the user to follow a normal gait. Instead, the user needs to first move the frame forward and then “walk in” to the frame with each foot, move the frame again, and so on. The user must learn to plant all four legs of a walker firmly on the ground before moving forward. A common error is allowing a slight elevation on the two front legs and leaning backward while moving. The rollator differs from standard walkers by having wheels instead of rubber tips on the front legs. A rollator makes it easier to advance the walking frame, especially over bumps on the walking surface such as carpet edges. A rollator is also easier to maneuver indoors.. There may be a slight loss of stability in the direction of forward movement, and the rollator frame must be inspected regularly to check for loose screws. Rollator designs often include built-in baskets for carrying personal items or small purchases as well as a seat or bench for resting while out and about.
