Think of a mattress pad as a thick layer of padding that helps make the bed more comfortable and prevents moisture from soiling the mattress. Typically mattress pads lie on top of the mattress. In addition to flannel and quilted cotton, mattress pads come in a variety of plush materials, from chenille to sheepskin to foam, all to help relieve aches and pains. "Egg Crate" textured foam or air-filled mattress pads may ease pressure on the skin. Convoluted mattress pads with an egg-crate dimpled design are created from high-density foam material to provide more comfort by distributing the sleeper’s body weight more evenly. This helps reduce local pressure on any point in the skin, allowing blood to circulate freely and preventing skin ulcers from forming. A sheepskin mattress pad does not specifically relieve pressure, but can redistribute it while adding comfort and warmth. Sheepskin absorbs moisture up to 20 times better than synthetics and reduces friction between surfaces. For a truly waterproof mattress pad covering, you may want to first place the mattress in a waterproof vinyl cover, then top it with a textured pad. Mattress pads are fairly uniform in width and length, but thickness may vary, a consideration when choosing the right fitted bed sheets.
