A mattress is an expensive investment; protect it with a mattress cover. A mattress cover actually serves two purposes: it provides an added layer of padding under the sleeper, making for a more restful sleep, and it protects the mattress from stains and odors due to spills or incontinence. Mattress covers add years to the life of your mattress. A waterproof mattress cover, usually made of vinyl, provides the best results. Better-quality mattress covers are made to be stain-resistant, flame-retardant and non-allergenic. Look for a mattress cover design that fully envelops the mattress and closes with a zipper. Although waterproof, the mattress cover should allow water vapor to pass through to prevent moisture build-up under it. Newer versions of vinyl mattress covers can be washed like ordinary cloth and sterilized afterwards. If in a hurry, the vinyl mattress cover can simply be wiped clean with soap and water and treated with disinfectant spray. It is important to get the right fit for mattress covers especially for depth, since mattress depths can vary significantly; widths and lengths for each size bed (twin, twin XL, queen, full and king) are typically uniform. Waterproof mattress covers are also available for bariatric size mattresses. If the depth of a mattress cover is between sizes, pick the next deeper size. Keep in mind that a thicker vinyl cover will be more durable; look for a mattress cover with at least 6-gauge strength.
