Bed underpads are moisture-absorbing incontinence supplies placed on a mattress or chair to protect the bed linens or furniture when incontinence undergarments don’t contain the flow. In situations when using incontinence briefs isn’t possible, a waterproof mattress pad can help prevent the formation of pressure ulcers on the skin of incontinent older adults or people with limited ability to shift position while lying in bed or sitting on a chair.
When shopping for bed underpads or a waterproof mattress pad, there are a number of important factors to consider: the absorption capacity of the inner core, its fluid-retention capability, the waterproof backing to protect the mattress or furniture and the ability to remain securely in place. Bed underpads should also be smooth enough to minimize friction and allow the patient to move freely without getting any skin injury that could develop into a pressure ulcer.
Special super-absorbent materials in many bed underpads attract moisture and distribute it all over the entire pad to avoid saturation in one spot. Some bed underpads are held in place either by adhesive strips at each corner of the pad that can be attached to a chair seat or by plastic flaps or elastics that go around each mattress corner.
Bed underpads are available in several sizes and with different backing materials such as vinyl and polyurethane.
