Bed rails have become effective tools in both hospitals and at home to help avoid falls from bed by elderly or unsteady patients. While bed rails certainly can prevent a wide range of injuries, the correct fit and use of assist or safety bed rails is essential. If you thrash around in your sleep, you can suffer bumps and bruises from the impact with the bars or get a limb entangled in the rails, causing injury. In addition to making sure that the bed rail and the bed itself, including the mattress size, are compatible, a number of accessories and alternative products can add to your safety factor as you sleep, avoiding these problems.
For example, Roll Control Bolster Pads [1740] protect against falls when you don’t want to use a metal side bed rails. Foam-padded for comfort and covered in durable wipe-clean vinyl, each bolster in 34" long and includes a Velcro strap to secure it.
When using a traditional safety bed rail, bed rail pads and gap protectors are available to reduce any gaps between the rails and your mattress and provide a cushioning barrier to keep hands or feet from going between the rails. Protective pads do not interfere with the raising and lowering of bed rails and are compatible with all types of bed rails, including those for home electric beds.
Cushioning pads designed for half- or full-length side rails easily hook on or fasten to extend below and between the rail and mattress, reducing gaps for extra protection. Many bed rail pads come with protective covers that are machine washable or are made of wipe-clean vinyl; some even incorporate staph-resistant materials. Others are made of softer fabrics designed for added comfort, like the Synthetic Sheepskin Bed Rail Pads [1896]. Each pad covers the bed side and the top of bed rail and fits all bed rails up to 18" high x 60" long. Completely washable, they are sold in sets of two.
For comfort and convenience, the bed rail quilted caddy [3220] is an accessory that keeps needed item within reach. It has two large and two small pockets and is held in place with Velcro attachment.
