Grab bars have helped prevent more accidents than any other safety item in the home. Grab bars are particularly essential in the bathroom. There should be grab bars at the entrance to the shower stall and inside it, on bathtub sides, on toilet walls, and other places where there is risk of falling. Towel bars cannot be used as substitute for grab bars—they aren’t made to handle the gravitation force of your body weight and could come right out of the wall. Bathroom grab bars should be 1.25 to 1.5” in diameter and capable of supporting at least 200 pounds of force or more, depending on the user’s weight. The clearance between grab bars and the wall must be 1.5”, but no wider because if your arm slips, it could get caught in the space between bar and wall or you could fall. Grab bars are available in many colors. Choose bathroom grab bars that contrast well with bathroom walls to ensure good visibility. Horizontally installed bathroom grab bars help a person push up; vertical grab bars help in pulling the body up. L-shaped grab bars that come with both horizontal and vertical bars are recommended for the bathtub or shower enclosure. Locate grab bars or bathtub rails in spots where you’re most likely to lose your balance, such as going into or out of the bathtub, shifting positions in the tub or shower and standing up from or sitting down on a bathtub transfer bench as well as getting on and off the toilet. Some bathtub bars attach to the outer side of the tub and might be preferable to mounting one on the wal
