For some reason, ever since my M.I.L. came back from a 3-week respite stay at a local assisted living facility in early July, she has not given my husband and me the opportunity to watch a movie or TV program alone in our family room. Not only are we not alone, but she has taken to sitting in my favorite chair, which happens to be next to my husband’s chair. She gets herself comfortable a good 2 hours before we sit down at about 10 PM to watch a program. Bottom line is, she is sitting between my husband and me for the only hour or so we have together before I turn in. Part of me wants to ask her nicely to please sit on the couch (where I’ve been banished to) so I can sit next to my husband and another part of me says to not be so petty, just let her stay there. Not to psychoanalyze too deeply, but is she trying to tell me something? I’ve been married to her son for 35 years and have been her part time caregiver for the last 7. My husband is as perplexed as I am. At the risk of ticking her off, I think I need to ask the same question that was asked in a famous fairy tale long ago—“Who’s been sitting in my chair?”
