Bed Rails: Better Safety For Seniors

Many choices in bed rails mean added safety home and away.

When Ellen became weak, she needed additional support to move around. Like many older people who are frail or are coping with a disease like arthritis or osteoporosis, getting in and out of bed had become a safety hazard. The solution was a simple one: Her daughter equipped Ellen’s bed with bed rails.

Bed rails, adjustable bedside assistants and handgrips become necessary devices when mobility and balance are problematic. They offer grab bar-like support when getting out of bed to prevent falls. Bed rails also provide a feeling of security by reducing the risk of falling out of bed while asleep.

There are many bed rail options and, when choosing a bed rail design, several factors to consider. To start, if your parent is having problems maintaining balance and frequently falls, you might consider a traditional bed rail that can be adjusted in length.

If he or she has mobility problems, opt for a bed rail and cane organizer. This rail option offers sturdy support for sitting up in bed and holds key items in its pockets, keeping them within arms’ reach.

For the parent who wants to be on the go, there are travel handles, or portable bed rail models, that he or she can pack in a suitcase to take on vacation or when visiting relatives for an overnight stay. These aids allow seniors to stay active despite their condition.

For comfort, consider adding bed rail pads. By providing additional cushioning, these protective covers decrease the possibility of bruises and bumps, of hands and feet getting caught between the rails, and of any abrasions when skin comes in contact with the metal of bed rails.

Maximize the benefits of bed rails by assessing the bed at the same time. Check for proper mattress and bed rail fit. Make sure gaps aren’t traps for flailing legs and hands, should your parent toss and turn during the night. And review any weight limitation on the bed rail to ensure your parent will be getting the full body support needed for their current weight.

Equipping your parent’s bed with the proper bed rail will not only allow your parent to rest comfortably and peacefully, but will also offer you peace of mind and nights without worry.
